In 2001, as an undergrad student at FSU, I conducted research for the Howard Baker Research Award titled, A Descriptive Analysis of Minority and Ethnic PhDs in Psychology Awarded at Florida State University. This work, submitted in 2002, was publicly accessible for over 20 years on the official FSU Department of Psychology webpage — until this link to their minority history page was removed: <http://www.psy.fsu.edu/history/minority/hollar.html> The minority history page, thus my research, was removed from the Department's website because in 2023, Florida Gov. DeSantis signed a bill into law banning the state's public colleges and universities from spending money on diversity, equity and inclusion programs. FSU, like many other public colleges and universities in the state folded to the political pressure and threats of defunding instead of standing upon the pillars on which they were built: "to preserve, expand, and share knowledge in the arts, humanities, sciences, technology, and professions." A couple of years ago, I requested a copy of my research and the webpage from the Psychology Department, since it was no longer publicly available via the link. They had it archived and gladly gave me a copy of the text although without any of the detailed graphs and charts depicting the extreme racial disparity in Black and Hispanic PhDs awarded in Psychology since the university was integrated in the 1960's. The removal of academic research from public access is disturbingly reminiscent of Fahrenheit 451, where books were burned to suppress knowledge and control thought. While the methods today may be more subtle —erasing data, removing links, and limiting access — the outcome is the same: restricting information that could educate, inspire, and open doors for others. Without racial and ethnic diversity research like this, I might never have gained entry into a top-tier program like FSU's Clinical Psychology program. FSU's Department of Psychology is known for its research and teaching. The department's faculty, like Dr. Thomas Joiner and Dr. Na'im Akbar, are nationally and internationally recognized for their excellence in research and teaching; consistently. Additionally, psychology is one of the most popular majors at FSU, making it highly competitive to gain entry at the graduate level. I believe the research I conducted as an undergrad inadvertently helped me, in part, present a case for my admission to the clinical psych graduate program. Who knows how many others may have benefited from the publicly available data and research over the last 2 decades? Who knows how many students would've been inspired to conduct similar research in their own programs and universities? Unfortunately, when knowledge disappears, so does opportunity.
